Rise and whine.
Who actually likes getting up in the morning? Does anybody enjoy the abrupt, dream shattering buzzer of an alarm?
There is a saying that ‘the early bird catches the worm’. That may somewhat ring true with the majority of people (and presumably birds), however, for us gamers, most of us stayed up late into the twilight hours killing that worm. Often, we test our endurance levels to the limit, promising ourselves the sweet release of slumber after we complete that one last level. Naturally, we never stick to such a ridiculous, inhibiting promise.
Unfortunately, there is a price to pay for such night time devotion. The exhilaration of last night’s gaming achievements slowly transforms into a grudging exhaustion, blood shot eyes and a distaste for human contact; all of which are confounded by the blasted ringing alarm.
There’s irrefutable proof that alarms are evil, too. The word ‘alarm’ is unsurprisingly defined as ‘to alert – fear – fright – or scare – to frighten – to perturb – to startle – to disturb’. Damning proof indeed.
But alas, do not despair fellow gamers, for I have selflessly undergone a meticulous scientific test attempting to discover the best gaming themes to wake up to, forever replacing the stock factory alarm sounds which were clearly designed to wake a sleeping Snorlax. Why gaming themes you ask? Well, ask yourself this: how many alarms provide the ambience of an enchanted forest, or have the power to rev you up for an epic adventure? There’s simply no better way then to start your day with an audible dose of gaming goodness.
Here are my top 10 gaming themes to wake up to:
For the full effect, and if you have the option, allow the volume to rise gradually.
10. Picknicka – Super Fantasy Zone
Ah, Super Fantasy Zone. I remember receiving this game as a present after a rather gruelling trip to the dentist when I was younger. Super Fantasy Zone’s music always made me feel happy and jolly. Picknicka is a fun and colourful song, brightening up even the most gloomiest of mornings. This song will certainly put you in the feel good zone.
9. Opening Theme – Tekken Tag Tournament
A powerful opening piano riff is quickly accompanied by a symphonic tirade of pure awesomeness. The Tekken Tag opening theme is the ideal tune if you’re planning an early morning gym session and require an electronic shot of musical momentum.
8. Sakura’s Theme – Super Puzzle Street Fighter II
God I love this song. Catchy and infectious; Sakura’s Theme is one of the highlights of a truly memorable soundtrack and perfectly suited to taming even the grouchiest, tired gamer.
7. Animal Crossing Main Theme – Animal Crossing Wild World
Potentially the most relaxing theme on the list, Animal Crossing Wild World’s title theme could easily provide the ambience to any major golf tournament. Delicate guitar work lays the foundation of a majestic title track, awakening the senses like an aromatic coffee served at The Roost.
6. Kokiri Forest – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Who wouldn’t want to wake up in the beautiful Kokiri Forest? Well now you can, with not a Navi in sight. Dainty, magical and enchanting, Kokiri Forest will cast a spell of happiness over your morning blues.
5. Cosmo Canyon – Final Fantasy VII
Nobuo Uematsu’s Cosmo Canyon theme will resonate deep in the hearts of many Final Fantasy VII fans. The theme is influenced by Native American sounds, infused with traditional Japanese stylings which culminate into a relaxing and moving symphony. The soft percussion is accompanied by a deep bass line, gently ushering in the dawn of a brand new day. Powerful, soothing and inspiring, Cosmo Canyon will reinvigorate your tired spirit.
4. Metal Gear Solid Main Theme – Metal Gear Solid
Ladies and gentlemen, your mornings are about to get a lot more epic. Waking up to Metal Gear’s main theme will deliver a thunderbolt of energy directly into your cerebral cortex. 3. Staff Roll 2 (Orchestra) – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D Soundtrack
A contender for one of the greatest gaming themes of all time, the orchestrated staff roll found on the Ocarina of Time 3D soundtrack has it all. It begins with a beautiful performance of Zelda’s unmistakable lullaby, provoking countless memories for gamer’s all around the world. An exhilarating symphony of nostalgia will awaken the senses of any jaded gamer, replacing thoughts of tiredness and fatigue with those of adventure and hope.
2. SOR Super Mix – Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 2 is blessed with a phenomenal soundtrack. However, in my humble opinion, the pinnacle track is definitely SOR Super Mix, also known as the opening theme. A suitably moody introduction is shortly accompanied by a solid beat, peppered with pitch and frequency changes. The beauty of SOR Super Mix is the ever changing background BGM. It’s light enough to gently awaken the heaviest of sleepers without causing too much disturbance as to offend.
1. Emerald Hill Zone – Sonic The Hedgehog
Subconsciously, this may be my number one choice due to the fact it may well have been the first gaming BGM I ever heard. Nonetheless, Emerald Hill Zone is an absolute classic and without a doubt one of the best gaming themes to start anyone’s day.
