It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact moment when the above combination of Katakana characters changed from altogether meaningless, to a genuine point of interest in my life. Perhaps it was after I’d slain my first Grand Jaggi in the sandy plains, battling the shrieking wyvern with dogged persistence until it succumbed to the force of my blade.
The original Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing was a decent kart racer which essentially provided fans with a Sega alternative to Nintendo’s Mario Kart series. However, one of its most common complaints was that it was incredibly similar to Nintendo’s offerings and that it didn’t take enough risks to differentiate itself, with many critics and general internet folk branding the game as a cheap rip-off.
The ‘sequel’ can often be a callous creation. Spawned from the eternal thirst for commercial success and the incessant cry of the almighty dollar, sequels can take on many forms. Throughout this console generation alone, there have been more sequels, prequels and trilogies than any other.
