Five more for the chop.

With Mortal Kombat X now on the horizon, the question on most people’s minds is which characters will return for the next instalment of the long running fighting game series. And, more importantly, which new characters will be replacing them.

Following suit from Mortal Kombat 9’s inclusion of Freddy Krueger and Kratos, NeatherRealm Studios’ creative director Ed Boon, has already announced that there will be at least one guest character included in MKX, which will most likely be integrated into the DLC. Upon hearing the news, I’ve put together a list of 5 guest characters that I’d love to play as in a Mortal Kombat title.

#1 Ash Williams (The Evil Dead)

Let’s kick things off with an obvious choice. A popular choice. Probably the most requested guest character. Ash Williams. He’s such a given due to the Evil Dead series’ cult following – the fact that the films are possibly even more outlandishly and hilariously gruesome than the Mortal Kombat games themselves shows why the people want him in there.

Groovy 2

Hail to the king, baby.

He is the destroyer of demons, the king of the catchphrase – the man has a chainsaw for a hand and a shotgun he calls his “Boomstick”. What more needs to be said? If there’s anyone more suited to be on this list than Ash, I’ll eat my own hand. *Revs Chainsaw* Groovy.

#2 Doomguy (Doom)

Just like the MK series, Doom is renowned for its intense scenes of graphic violence. Being released only a year apart from the original Mortal Kombat, these two games paved the way for extreme violence in the medium, and have seen it become an integral part of today’s video game culture. For this reason alone, ‘Doomguy’ has more than earned his right to appear as a guest character.

Doomguy 2

Ultra-Violence

He would no doubt boast a huge array of firearms, some of which (BFG 9000) could give him a couple of supercharged attacks to see him becoming almost like an over the top version of Stryker. Our masked protagonist could also have his standard green armour completely redesigned the way the ninjas did in MK9, to give him that uniqueness he never had in Doom. Having a fatality that changes to a first person perspective and has you blowing holes in your opponent’s face would be priceless… As long as they did a better job of it than they did in the movie.

#3 Blanka (Street Fighter)

I’ve always had a bit of a gripe about this one. Now, I doubt we’ll ever see this come to fruition, unless Capcom decides to create a crossover title like they did with Street Fight x Tekken, but I always thought that Blanka would be much more suited to the Mortal Kombat universe. The fact he has green skin, huge fangs, giant claws and can generate electricity makes him stick out like a sore thumb in the Street Fighter series.

Blanka 1

Blanka… In… Wrong… Series!

I have no doubt that NetherRealm Studios would do an amazing job at horrifically reimagining Blanka’s implausible and almost non-existent backstory; as well as finally making his brutal attacks (clawing, biting and electrifying) as gruesome as they ought to be. No, as they downright DESERVE to be.

#4 Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane (Game Of Thrones)

After I saw the episode “The Mountain and the Viper” this was instantly the first name on my list. Unless you’ve been living under a rock these past few years and have somehow missed out on HBO’s Game of Thrones, let me tell you a bit about Gregor Clegane. Essentially he’s a knight, a very nasty one at that. Said to be the largest man in Westeros, “The Mountain” is a barbaric behemoth with a penchant for extreme violence, whose sword is about as huge as he is. When we were first properly introduced to him in season 4, prisoners were being forced to fight him to the death as punishment for their crimes (it’s safe to say, none of them survived). Like many of the existing MK characters, he even has a twisted backstory to boot: as a child, he burnt his little brother’s face off, just for playing with his toys. Now if he doesn’t qualify, I don’t know who will.

Mountain 2

Erm… You have a little red on you…

Oh, and without spoiling anything, those who have seen the aforementioned episode can take a guess at what his fatality might be. For those that haven’t… Let’s just say it’s about as graphic as it gets.

#5 Gordon Freeman (Half-Life)

Granted, this may sound like a stupid idea, “He’s not suited to Mortal Kombat at all” I hear you say? Correctamundo. But that’s exactly why I’d love to see him in the game. Let me explain. The premise of Half-Life is that Gordon Freeman, a seemingly mild-mannered, nerdy scientist, has his world thrown into komplete khaos (thank you) when he is left alone in his research facility to battle aliens, the army, the government and even gets transported to a hostile world which he must fight his way out of. His appeal is that he’s not a warrior… Not a solider… He’s just a guy, trying to get out of a terrible situation.

Freeman 1

“It’s safer here.”

Now, throwing him into the Mortal Kombat universe would REALLY tick him off and maybe push him down a rabbit-hole even he couldn’t come back from. I guess I’d just really like to see how his character would deal with the mess he’s in and (more importantly) how he’d handle himself against the rest of the roster… With a gravity-gun and a crowbar I’d imagine.

So that’s my selection of character for Mortal Kombat X. Who would you like to see? Spill blood in the comments section below.
